Reichsbahn Eagle on train

From approximately 1937 the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DRB) adopted and used extensively the Richard Klein designed eagle as its emblem. This eagle emblem was used widely throughout the DRB  and adorned the train engines and carriages of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. There are also several examples of these eagles being used on trucks, buses and cars related to the DRB. The eagles came in a number of different sizes and were made by a number of manufacturers. In some examples the eagles included a large “D” and “R” representing the “Deutsches Reich” which is not to be confused with the Deutsche Reichsbahn (then referred to as DRB). An additional front facing eagle was introduced in 1938/1939 and was positioned on the nose of the engine.

The various eagles remained in use up until the end of the war (1945) although from 1941, in order to save raw materials, it was ordered that only decals and painted versions of the eagles be used.

During and after the final stages of the war the DRB eagles became favourite “souvenirs” by allied soldiers. Many were removed and sent back to the soldiers home countries. In the collector community they are highly sought after due to their size and iconic appearance. They are often the centrepiece of many displays. With the exception of the Rheingold eagle and the decals, they are made of aluminium composite (Gal-Mg-Si) however the backs vary considerably with makers marks and stud locations.
