Eagle is perched on an oak leaf wreath that surrounds a black mobile swastika. The carver’s name “J. Weih” is carved into the wreath. The eagle has been cut at least 3 times & is now reassembled & plywood reinforced on the reverse. The eagle was captured by Sergeant Harry Kuhn, a tank crew member from NSDAP Party headquarters in Munich, Germany. Kuhn attempted to put it inside his tank but was unable to fit the eagle through the top hatch. He proceeded to cut 1 wing off the eagle however it still did not fit through the hatch. He then went to a local jeweller who carefully recut the wings along the feather line thus enabling the eagle to fit inside the tank. Kuhn paid 1 carton of cigarettes to a U.S. officer who shipped the eagle home to Kuhn’s mother’s house in the United States. Sadly, Kuhn was subsequently killed in the war. The eagle remained in the family house from 1945-1968 in the original shipping box. In 1968, an unknown person purchased Kuhn’s mother’s estate & all of her belongings. The eagle remained in the possession of this individual until 1997.
