This early pattern hand-carved Nazi party eagle was captured by Lt. Bill Woodward, U.S. 9th Army, on the final U.S. thrust into the suburbs of Berlin immediately before Eisenhower ordered the advance ceased and declared all objectives taken. It was removed from a fortified German headquarters building that had been hastily abandoned by the enemy. It was given to his nephew, Michael Wheat in 1954 as a gift.
