‘Ehrenschale fur hervorragende Kampfleistungen der Luftwaffe’, or Luftwaffe ‘Honor Salver’. This is an award for outstanding non-aerial combat performance by a member of the Luftwaffe during World War II. At the center is a national eagle with a swastika and crossed marshal’s batons clutched in its talons. Beneath, part of the pressing of the plate and the same on all such plates, appears the expression: ‘IN RECOGNITION OF EXCEPTIONAL COMBAT ACHIEVEMENTS’. Above the eagle’s head is the recipient’s name and date of the award, engraved very finely by hand: ‘OBERJAGER OTTO HAGENBUCHNER AM 17.10.43’. The underside of the ehrenschale bears the stamp of maker: ‘JOH.WAGNER&SOHN’, the only maker of these salvers. A second stamp indicates that the plate is heavily silver-plated alpaca. Tarnished, else fine. The ‘Ehrenschale der Luftwaffe’ was introduced on June 15, 1942 by Reichsmarshall Hermann Goering and was intended to be awarded to members of the Luftwaffe field army units as distinguished from awards given to Luftwaffe aviators who were awarded honor goblets, etc. It is estimated that only about fifty of these were awarded, the exact number being unknown.
