Unusual eagles

A number of eagles don’t fit into the known styles and have peculiarities that may not yet be explained. This page shows some of these examples and demonstrates that there are many variations on the standard eagle designs and markings.

Engraved eagle

This eagle has various engravings on both the wings and the arms of the swastika. It is possible these were added post war but given they are in german and appear to have aged consistent with the eagle itself the high likelihood is that the markings are from the period. A very unique eagle. The markings on the swastika refer to geographic locations. The markings on the wings refer to people (Left Wing: Obergefreiter Horst Pfall Berlin, Gefreiter Erich Voller Dresden, Obergefreiter Herbert Lauschner Berlin, Gefreiter Konrad Brohanser Nurnberg, Gefreiter Friedrich Werner Giesen). The right wing is not clear enough in the photos to read. Photos removed by request. Looking for new photos – please contact us at info@thirdreicheagles.com.

Cut-out swastika

There a very few examples of eagles where the swastika has been cut-out from the wreath. There is examples in the 720mm (28″) – 1st pic, and the 900mm (35″) versions – following pics. Pictures from Hitler’s train show cut-out 35 inch eagles. These are very rare with very few known examples. Included below are also 3 pictures (the last 3) that are cut-out but believed to be fakes.

Note: On the 28″ version there is no studs at all on the back and no visible makers mark (quite unusual) – better photos would be needed to verify the authenticity of this one.

Some photos removed on request. Looking for additional photos of large cut-out swastika eagles – please contact us at info@thirdreicheagles.com.

Reproduction cut-outs exist: More information can be found here

Golden eagle – sample 1

This eagle is gold in color. It has been stated that it is not gold paint but gilded/golf leaf. The eagle itself is authentic, however the color is non-standard and no evidence exists that this was done in the period. It is 900mm (35″). Photos removed by request. Looking for new photos – please contact us at info@thirdreicheagles.com.

Golden eagle – sample 2

This eagle is gold in color. The eagle itself is authentic, however the color is non-standard and no evidence exists that this was done in the period. It is a 600mm (24″) PS.

Shortened Wings

Below are two examples of eagles where the wings have been cut off to reduce their size. This may have been done as the eagles had damaged wings (as a result of forced removal from the train) or deliberately in a bid to mislead. As the wings contain many of the makers and other marks that help identify and authenticate it is hard to say if they were copies or original birds.
